01 / BRIEF

Create promotional graphics for Back in Black, a student event and pre-game rally leading up to an Illinois State football game.

The goal was to create an energetic visual identity that would attract a college-age audience and encourage students to participate in the event and show their school spirit.

02 / PROBLEM

How can event graphics capture the energy of college sports while feeling relevant and engaging to students?

The challenge was to create a flexible visual system that could work across campus signage, digital platforms, and promotional merchandise while building excitement around the upcoming football game.

03 / INSIGHT

School spirit is built through the energy, personality, and visual culture surrounding the game.

Sports graphics often use bold typography, layered imagery, and high-energy compositions to create excitement. Combining that visual language with the personal, collected feeling of scrapbooking created an opportunity for the event identity to feel both spirited and student-driven.

04 / DESIGN INTENT

Create a bold event identity inspired by sports graphics and scrapbook aesthetics.

The centerpiece of the identity was custom typography created by manipulating and arranging strips of black duct tape to form the “Back in Black” title. The handmade lettering introduced texture and personality while reinforcing the event's black-focused theme.

05 / OUTCOME

The final campaign included digital event signage, web and print variations, an animated Instagram Story, and branded merchandise.

The custom duct-tape typography became the foundation of the visual system, carrying the event identity across each application. Merchandise included a custom sticker and a fully designed blanket, extending the campaign beyond promotional graphics and into physical student experiences.
