01 / BRIEF

Create an interactive publication that explores the design and marketing tactics food brands use to influence consumer perception.

The project was inspired by a growing interest in understanding the products marketed to us and making more intentional choices about what we consume and use.

02 / PROBLEM

How can design encourage people to look beyond the labels and question the messages they're being sold?

Food packaging often uses visual language, claims, and imagery to create perceptions of health and wellness. These messages can make it difficult for consumers to understand what a product is actually communicating versus what the branding wants them to believe.

03 / INSIGHT

Not everything labeled “healthy” tells the full story.

The language and visual cues surrounding a product can be just as influential as the information on the label. By exposing these strategies, the project encourages viewers to become more aware of how design shapes their perception and purchasing decisions.

04 / DESIGN INTENT

Transform research into a hands-on editorial experience that makes the tactics behind food marketing easier to recognize.

The publication uses interactive elements, visual comparisons, and paper-cut techniques to reveal how packaging and advertising can influence perceptions of health. The design intentionally creates moments of discovery, encouraging viewers to interact with the information rather than simply read it.

05 / OUTCOME

The final project is an interactive book that uncovers common design and marketing strategies used to influence consumer perception.

By transforming research into a tactile experience, Designed to Deceive encourages viewers to look beyond the label, question the messages they're being sold, and become more intentional consumers.
